Moreton Island has 3 main towns, often called villages because of their
relatively small size and uniqueness. All are situated on the western
coast of the Island, protected from the strong prevailing winds.
All have excellent and inexpensive accommodation to rent mainly in the
form of holiday houses/units and beach shacks.
The northern most town is Bulwer where the northern barge lands from the
mainland, with a small licensed shop, an excellent fishing & bait store,
and a country garage where ice and fuel can be purchased. Once the base of
the pilots who guided ship safely into Moreton Bay.

About 20 minutes drive from Bulwer is the town of Cowan or correctly as
Cowan Cowan. Situated approximately halfway between Bulwer & the main
island resort, Cowan is regarded by some as the "up-market place to own
a
holiday house or rent a beach house. The Moreton Island Accommodation &
Visitors Information Centre have holiday rental properties at very reasonable
prices. Cowan Cowan was the site of an old navy signal station known as
Fort Cowan - Brisbane's first line of defence during World War 11.

Kooringal is the Island's most southerly town and possible the most picturesque.
The Kooringal Store which also houses the World Famous "Gutter Bar"
is set on a
sandy track Esplanade. The store still siphons petrol from ancient pumps.
Excellent beach house or backpacker style accommodation is available from
